According to recent research the average consumer visits 23 websites, watches almost an hour of online video and spends approximately 12 hours in total shopping time before even entering a car dealership. The test drive is one of the most important parts of the car buying process so it is surprising that it is often skipped or overlooked by car shoppers. Glenn Ford is here to offer a few simple test drive tips to help you get the most out of your car buying experience.
Know Your Vehicle
The test drive often starts with you and your salesperson performing a walk around presentation of the vehicle. Make sure the features match those you are specifically looking for if a feature is missing or there is something you don’t understand don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson about it.
Before you begin driving make sure to locate and note how easy it is to access the headlight controls, windshield wiper controls, radio controls and climate controls. Also, don’t forget to look at the glove compartment and center console storage areas.
If you have kids in child safety seats, bring the seats and the kids with you. Take the time to install the seats in the vehicle you’ll be test driving, and buckle the kids in. This way, the whole family gets to experience what their potential new car, truck or SUV will feel like during the test drive.
Now the final step before you begin the test drive is to adjust your seat, the steering wheel, the mirrors and the foot pedals (if available).
Turn off the radio until the end of the test drive so you can better hear cabin noise, engine noise, gear changes, and wind noise. And don’t forget to test the horn!
Bring a Friend
Getting a second person’s opinion on the driving dynamics, noise level and ride quality is always helpful. It also gives you an impartial sounding board to voice your likes and dislikes.
On the Road
Once on the road, it is best to duplicate your everyday driving conditions. If you spend the majority of your time on the highway make sure your test drive match the conditions, you will be spending the most time in your car. Also don’t forget to check your blind spots, check the brakes, and check parking/turning radius.
Test Comparable Models
If you plan on driving multiple vehicles before making your final decision, it is best to test drive each of the vehicles on the same day. This makes it easier to compare features, ride and feel, and other options against each other.
